Summary
Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), the core bank of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (SMFG), was formed through the merger of The Sumitomo Bank, Limited, and The Sakura Bank, Limited. Although the smallest of the Japanese megabanks by assets (the other two being Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. and Mizuho Financial Group, Inc.), SMFG is one of the largest banking groups in the world by assets. SMFG's primary operating company for commercial banking is SMBC; other subsidiaries and affiliates are involved in securities, leasing, credit cards and consumer finance.
